Smash Up Expansions Overview & Buying Guide

This post was last updated on November 23rd, 2023

Smash Up Expansions cover image

When I first played Smash Up, the base game, I fell immediately in love with it.
I tried all the possible pairings between factions, discovered some of the best winning strategies and I had the feeling I was starting to get better day by day.

But it was only when I discovered all the Smash Up expansions that I realized I knew nothing.

Dozens of factions, with unique gameplay mechanics and hundreds of deck combinations, could easily make anyone feel overwhelmed!

So I decided to write this article with the aim of helping the ones of you that want to know a bit more about some of the best Smash Up expansions out there before purchasing them.
This list takes into consideration only the standard Smash Up expansions that contain 4 or 5 new decks. All the other big-box expansions or promotional packs will be mentioned in another article.

Awesome Level 9000

Thought you had enough awesome with Pirates, Ninjas, and Zombies? Well, get a load of this, bucko: Killer Plants, Steampunks, Ghosts, and Bear Cavalry are here to smash into your game!
Plants grow out of control. Steampunks build on bases. Ghosts shriek out of the ether, and Bear Cavalry scares away the opposition.
Awesome Level 9000 box description

Components

  • Killer Plants;
  • Ghosts;
  • Steampunks;
  • Bear Cavalry;
  • Core set base cards with enlarged text + 8 new Base cards;
  • 1 VP Tokens Sheet;
  • 1 rulebook.

Factions overview

Smash Up expansions Killer Plants

KILLER PLANTS: this faction revolves its strength on growing and getting better over time, which means that minions have to stay on the board as long as possible to fully benefit from their gameplay mechanics.
Cards examples:

  • Water Lily
    Ongoing: draw a card at the start of each of your turns. Only use one Water Lily’s ability each turn.
  • Sprout
    Ongoing: destroy this card at the start of your next turn. You may search your deck for a minion of power 3 or less, and play it here as an extra minion. Shuffle your deck.

Suggested pairings: Aliens, Robots, Zombies, Pirates, Werewolves and Superheroes.

Smash Up expansions Ghosts

GHOSTS: this is a unique faction that relies on having a very small amount of cards (2 or less) in your hand. They are really strong, but also very difficult to play, so I wouldn’t recommend using them to any beginner of this game.
Cards examples:

  • Haunting
    Ongoing: If you have two or fewer cards in your hand, this minion has +3 power and is not affected by other players’ cards.
  • Door to the Beyond
    Play on a base. Ongoing: If you have two or fewer cards in your hand, each of your minions here has +2 power.

Suggested pairings: Aliens, Zombies, Rock Stars and Killer Plants.

Smash Up expansions Steampunks

STEAMPUNKS: they are extremely powerful and straightforward to play, as they mostly rely on base actions. Absolutely my favourite faction of this expansion.
Cards examples:

  • Aggromotive
    Play on a base. Ongoing: If you have a minion here, you have +5 power here.
  • Rotary Slug Thrower
    Play on a base. Ongoing: Your minions here each have +2 power.

Suggested pairings: Dragons, Trickster, Elders, Kaiju and Ancient Incas.

Smash Up expansions Bear Cavalry

BEAR CAVALRY: the most powerful faction of this expansion. They rely on the combination of moving the opponent’s minions from a base to another and destroy them.
Cards examples:

  • Club Scout
    Ongoing: After another player’s minion moves here, if it has less power than this minion, destroy it.
  • High Ground
    Play on a base. Ongoing: If you have a minion here, destroy any other player’s minion that moves here.

Suggested pairings: Pirates, Dinosaurs, Sharks and Tornados.

Buy it or skip it? BUY IT!

This expansion was the first released, it was also the first I have ever tried and I still think is one of the best ever released.
All the factions are fun to play, well balanced and can be easily paired with a lot of base game factions.

If you liked the base game, I think this is one of the Smash Up expansions that is an essential addition to add depth and variety!
(And let’s not forget the core set base cards with enlarged text for better reading).

RELATED Smash Up

The Obligatory Cthulhu Set

If you’re ready to embrace the creatures beyond the understanding of mortal men, then shuffle up these guys with your pirates, bear cavalry, and others for the most awesome fit of crazed insanity you’ve had in a long time!
The Obligatory Cthulhu Set box description

Components

  • Elder Things;
  • Innsmouth;
  • Minions of Cthulhu;
  • Miskatonic University;
  • Madness deck;
  • 8 new Base cards;
  • 1 VP Tokens Sheet;
  • 1 rulebook.

Factions overview

Before jumping into each faction I just want to write a couple of lines to explain the new Madness deck.
It is a stand-alone deck that belongs to no one and can only be accessed through specific abilities. Each faction in The Obligatory Cthulhu Set includes cards that have some interactions with Madness.
These cards have a unique impact on the game: at the end of the game, for each pair of Madness cards that you have in your hand/deck/discard pile, you lose 1 VP.

Ok, now we are ready to take a closer look at the factions!

Smash Up expansions elder things

ELDER THINGS: this faction is great at sabotaging and manipulating the game by giving to the other players an insane amount of Madness cards. They are created with the only intention to drive your opponents crazy, and for this reason, most of the time this faction is banned from the table.
Cards examples:

  • Shoggoth
    You can only play this minion on a base where you have at least 6 power. Each other player may draw a Madness card. Destroy a minion here belonging to each player who does not do so.
  • Insanity
    Each other player draws two Madness cards.

Suggested pairings: Zombies, Time Travelers, Robots and Tricksters.

Smash Up expansions Innsmouth

INNSMOUTH: the core mechanic of this deck is to get as much “The Locals” cards as possible on the board and later on boost them all. By the most, this is the weakest faction of the expansion, and that’s technically true. Although if paired with the right faction it can be fun… and you could even win!
Cards examples:

  • The Locals
    Reveal the top three cards of your deck. Place any The Locals revealed into your hand. Put the rest of the cards on the bottom of your deck.
  • The Deep Ones
    Each of your minions of power 2 or less get +1 power until the end of the turn.

Suggested pairings: Grannies, Killer Plants, Rock Stars and Robots.

Smash Up expansions Minion of Cthulhu

MINIONS OF CTHULHU: “embrace the madness” is their motto. This faction mechanic forces you to draw Madness cards to unlock powerful effects.
Cards examples:

  • Corruption
    Draw a Madness card. Destroy a minion.
  • The Seal is Broken
    Draw a Madness card. Gain 1 VP.

Suggested pairings: Aliens, Samurai, Tricksters, Robots and Super Spies.

Smash Up expansions Miskatonic university

MISKATONIC UNIVERSITY: the natural nemesis of the Elder Things faction. Miskatonic University uses the madness cards to your advantage before getting rid of them. Absolutely the best faction of this expansion and quite possibly one of the best faction of the game.
Cards examples:

  • Jinkies
    Return up to 2 Madness cards from your hand or discard pile to the Madness deck.
  • Professor
    Talent: Discard a Madness card. If you do, you may play an extra action and/or an extra minion.

Suggested pairings: basically anyone!! I found really interesting pairing them with Super Spies.

Buy it or skip it? TIE.

This is the second of the Smash Up expansions released, back in 2013, and as the name says, this one is quite obligatory if you like this theme!
I wasn’t impressed at all when I first tried it, but I might have misjudged it, because today after some more games played, I can definitely say that this expansion is really solid.

All the factions added here are fun to play and overall well-balanced.
They are all kind of built around this new Madness mechanic, which may not be suited for everyone’s taste, but they absolutely add a different and unique flavour to the game.

I think this expansion can be either loved or hated.
If you like the Cthulhu theme, go for it, otherwise, spend your money on something that is more blended with the base game and the other expansions.

Science Fiction Double Feature

Science Fiction Double Feature brings four new groups to the base-smashing business, with abilities unlike those seen before. The Time Travelers will allow you to reuse and replay your cards time and time again. The Cyborg Apes take actions that attach to your minions to a whole new level. Super Spies use their mojo in espionage to plot out the future of you and your opponents, while the Shapeshifters could be anyone…
Science Fiction Double Feature box description

Components

  • Cyborg Apes;
  • Shapeshifters;
  • Super Spies;
  • Time Travelers;
  • 8 new Base cards;
  • 1 VP Tokens Sheet;
  • 1 rulebook.

Factions overview

Smash Up expansions Cyborg Apes

CYBORG APES: these cyber beasts are incredible at enhancing themselves with “on-minion” actions, therefore their minions can easily reach a really high power beyond their base value.
Cards examples:

  • Furious George
    Ongoing: Has +1 power for each action played on it.
  • Cyberevolution
    Play on a minion. Ongoing: This minion has +3 power.

Suggested pairings: Musketeers, Princesses, Pirates, Wizards, Dinosaurs and Fairies.

Smash Up expansions Shapeshifters

SHAPESHIFTERS: as you could image, this faction’s core mechanic revolves around copying the opponents’ cards, either minion or actions. The strength of this faction depends almost entirely on the opponent’s strength.
Cards examples:

  • Copycat
    Choose another player’s minion in play. This card has the same ability as that minion until the end of the turn.
  • Mimic
    Ongoing: This minion’s power is equal to the highest power printed on a minion card in play.

Suggested pairings: Teddy Bears, Rock Stars, Aliens, Vikings and Samurai.

Smash Up expansions Super Spies

SUPER SPIES: this faction has an amazing board control value thanks to their abilities to check the upcoming cards, disrupting the opponent deck and at the same time improving your deck.
Cards examples:

  • Operative
    Reveal the top card of each player’s deck. Place any of those cards on the bottom of their owner’s deck. Return the other cards to the top of their decks.
  • Secret Agent
    Ongoing: After another player plays an action, he or she must discard a card.

Suggested pairings: Grannies, Miskatonic University, Bear Cavalry, Mysthic Horses and Time Travelers.

Smash Up expansions Time Travelers

TIME TRAVELERS: this faction is specialized in deck manipulation thanks to their ability to get cards back from the discard pile and replaying them, sometimes as an extra card in the same turn. Unfortunately is one of the weakest factions of the game.
Cards examples:

  • 1.21 Gigawatts
    Shuffle all actions or all minions from your discard pile into your deck.
  • Repeater Perfect
    Place an action from your discard pile on top of your deck.

Suggested pairings: Aliens, Giant Ants, Vikings, Kung Fu Fighters and Super Spies.

Buy it or skip it? BUY IT!

After the release of The Obligatory Cthulhu Set, which was a bit disappointing for a lot of people, we are now back on track with a more standard Smash Up expansion.
And it is quite a good one.

It adds interesting gameplay mechanics variations, thanks to the Shapeshifters and the Time Travelers, even though the real prize here is the Super Spies faction.
You can create some combo that you’ll never forget (Miskatonic University/Super Spies… coff coff…)

Monster Smash

We were working in the lab, late one night… then we made Monster Smash! This expansion for Smash Up brings you four new creepy decks to scare your opponents to death! Vampires drain power from their victims. Mad Scientists contruct bizarre creations of great strength. Werewolves go berserk with power. Giant Ants swarm their victims. It’s enough to make you run out of the theater in terror!
Monster Smash box description

Components

  • Giant Ants;
  • Mad Scientists;
  • Vampires;
  • Werewolves;
  • 8 new Base cards;
  • 1 VP Tokens Sheet;
  • 1 rulebook.

Factions overview

Smash Up expansions Giant Ants

GIANT ANTS: this faction focuses on getting as many power counters as possible to be able to consequently boost all their minions. But not only that, you can also transfer these tokens from minion to minion making this faction extremely mobile and versatile.
Cards examples:

  • Soldier
    Place two +1 power counters on this minion. Talent: Transfer a +1 power counter from this minion to another minion.
  • We Will Rock You
    Each of your minions gains +1 power for each +1 power counter on it until the end of the turn.

Suggested pairings: Musketeers, Pirates, Killer Plants, Mad Scientists and Wizards.

Smash Up expansions Mad Scientists

MAD SCIENTISTS: the core mechanic of this faction revolves around getting +1 power counters and successively use them to triggers powerful and useful abilities.
Cards examples:

  • Überserum
    Play on a minion. Ongoing: At the start of your turn, place a +1 power counter on this minion. This minion cannot be destroyed.
  • The Monster
    Talent: Remove a +1 power counter from this minion to play an extra minion.

Suggested pairings: Pirates, Giant Ants, Shapeshifters and Robots.

Smash Up expansions Vampires

VAMPIRES: vampires’ core mechanic is to sacrifice or destroy weak minions in order to get +1 power counters and boost their strongest minions.
Cards examples:

  • Nightstalker
    Destroy a minion of power 2 or less here to place a +1 power counter on this minion.
  • Dinner date
    Place a +1 power counter on your minion. Destroy a minion of power 2 or less at that minion’s base.

Suggested pairings: Tricksters, Robots, Pirates, Giant Ants and Wizards.

Smash Up expansions Werewolves

WEREWOLVES: this faction is the only one that doesn’t use the +1 power counters. Instead, they get temporary strength boosts under certain circumstances, such as right before base scores or a boost until the end of the turn.
Cards examples:

  • Pack Alpha
    Special: Before this base scores, each of your minions here gains +1 power until the end of the turn.
  • Teenage Wolf
    Talent: This minion gains +1 power until the end of the turn.

Suggested pairings: Shapeshifters, Princesses, Killer Plants and Mythic Horses.

Buy it or skip it? SKIP IT!

If you decide to go ahead with this addition, prepare yourself to manage a lot of +1 power counters because 3 of the 4 factions in this expansion have the ability to boost their minions with these tokens.
All these 4 decks have a really appealing idea behind them, but, unfortunately, that idea hasn’t been transferred to the actual cards.

Vampires and Werewolves are really boring and weak factions, in fact, Vampires is probably the worst faction in the entire game. It just doesn’t work.
The Giant Ants deck is built on a nice concept and Mad Scientists are really strong and fun to play.

Out of these 4, I would only choose 1 faction (Mad Scientists) if I would be forced to play with this expansion. Not enough to recommend it to you.
I would skip it, this is definitely not one of the best Smash Up expansions out there.

Pretty Pretty Smash Up

Think only pirates, time travelers, vampires, and bears can smash bases? Well, get ready to be taught a lesson… in the nicest way possible!
Pretty Pretty Smash Up brings the sweetest factions ever to the vicious fight for victory!
Pretty Pretty Smash Up box description

Components

  • Fairies;
  • Kitty Cats;
  • Mythic Horses;
  • Princesses;
  • 8 new Base cards;
  • 4 divider cards;
  • 1 VP Tokens Sheet;
  • 1 rulebook.

Factions overview

Smash Up expansions Fairies

FAIRIES: this is a faction that can really cause your opponents a strong headache. The focus of the deck revolves around the double choice of disrupting opponents’ actions in play or choosing to advantage yourself. Queens of board manipulation.
Cards examples:

  • Magic Acorns
    Each other player discards a card at random, OR you draw a card and play an extra action.
  • Titania
    Return an opponent’s minion to its owner’s hand, OR play an extra minion.

Suggested pairings: Pirates, Cyborg Apes, Sharks, Mythic Greeks and Dragons.

KITTY CATS: despite their cute look, Kitty Cats can be a real threat. Their core mechanic gameplay focuses on lowering opponent minions’ power and taking control of them. They also benefit from destroying minions they control.
Cards examples:

  • Mr. Grumpers
    Choose a minion. It has -2 power until the end of the turn
  • Cat’s Paw
    Take control of a minion of power 5 or less until the end of the turn.

Suggested pairings: Mad Scientists, Tricksters, Ninja, Fairies and Shapeshifters.

Smash Up expansions Mythic Horses

MYTHIC HORSES: their gameplay is very straightforward. This faction relies on having multiple minions on the same base to get buffs and card draws.
Cards examples:

  • Starlyte
    Ongoing: This minion has +1 power for each of your other minions here.
  • Super Future Space Armor Power
    Each of your minions that is on a base with another of your minions gains +2 power until the end of the turn

Suggested pairings: Steampunks, Zombies, Wizards, Robots, Rock Stars and Killer Plants.

PRINCESSES: this faction is slightly unusual having only 5 minions in the deck (all power 5), but all of these Princesses have really strong talents that can change a game if used correctly and against the right factions.
Cards examples:

  • Eliza
    Ongoing: Other players cannot play more than one extra card per turn.
  • Sleeping Beauty
    Ongoing: If this minion would go to the discard pile, shuffle it into your deck instead.

Suggested pairings: Wizards, Fairies, Miskatonic University, Clerics and Super Spies.

Buy it or skip it? BUY IT!

Amongst all the Smash Up expansions released so far, we kind of needed something else to add a little bit more variety to the table.
Probably what we were missing was a pinch of pinkiness in the game, and with this expansion, I guess we got it!

It is truly fun to play and all the factions are easily compatible with the base game ones.
This expansion is one of the favourites in my group of fellow gamers, and I totally recommend it! Just be aware of those cute cats!

RELATED Smash Up

It’s Your Fault

You’ve done it this time… You’ve made one of the best Smash Up sets ever! We let the fans vote and determine new factions for Smash Up, and you came through with some awesomeness. All four factions in this box were the top of thousands of nominations, and then survived a bracket vote, all to get to you today!
It’s Your Fault box description

Components

  • Dragons;
  • Mythic Greeks;
  • Sharks;
  • Superheroes;
  • Tornados;
  • 8 new Base cards;
  • 5 divider cards;
  • 1 VP Tokens Sheet;
  • 1 rulebook.

Factions overview

Smash Up expansions Dragons

DRAGONS: this faction lands on the table to create pure chaos on the bases, making them less desirable to the other players while making your plays stronger.
Cards examples:

  • Imperial Dragon
    Ongoing: After another player plays or moves a minion here, draw a card.
  • Great Wyrm
    Ongoing: Other players here are awarded 1 less VP from this base when it scores.

Suggested pairings: Steampunks, Pirates, Dinosaurs, Kaiju, Teddy Bears and Super Spies.

MYTHIC GREEKS: these mighty legends are all about playing actions, here known as “favours of Gods”. The more you play those cards the stronger their minions become!
Cards examples:

  • Odysseus
    Choose a minion. It has -2 power until the end of the turn
  • Favor of Athena
    Reveal the top 5 cards of your deck. You may place one of the revealed actions into your hand, and return the rest to the top of your deck in any order

Suggested pairings: Wizards, Mad Scientists, Fairies, Sharks and Musketeers.

Smash Up expansions Sharks

SHARKS: very simple mechanic, destroy every minion you encounter on your path and get stronger after each kill.
Cards examples:

  • Hammerhead
    Ongoing: After a minion here is destroyed, place a +1 power counter on this minion.
  • Blood in the Water
    Play on a base. Ongoing: After a minion is destroyed here, you may play a minion here of power 3 or less as an extra minion.

Suggested pairings: Kung Fu Fighters, Bear Cavalry, Fairies, Mythic Greeks and Rock Stars.

SUPERHEROES: as you can imagine, this faction’s core mechanic is to transform (destroy) your low-powered minions to search for your much stronger ones.
Cards examples:

  • Mild Mannered Citizen
    Ongoing: At the start of your turn you may destroy this minion to search your deck for a minion of power 5 or more, play it here as an extra minion, and shuffle your deck.
  • Justice Friends
    Each of your minions of power 5 or more gains +2 power until the end of the turn.

Suggested pairings: Miskatonic University, Werewolves, Halfling, Shapeshifters and Killer Plants.

TORNADOS: another pretty easy-to-guess faction… they focus on moving minions around, either yours or other players’, to get advantages. If those minions are Sharks, that’s even better!
Cards examples:

  • Gone with the Wind
    Special: Play after a base scores. You may move one of your minions from there to another base instead of the discard pile.
  • Twister
    You may move a minion of power 3 or less from here to another base, or from another base to here.

Suggested pairings: Explorers, Bear Cavalry, Sharks, Dinosaurs and Cyborg Apes.

Buy it or skip it? BUY IT!

This is the first one, since the beginning of the Smash Up expansions era, where fans had to vote which factions would appear in the box, and this is actually pretty cool from AEG!
But what is even cooler is the absolute surprise of seeing 5 factions instead of the standard 4! Personally speaking, that wasn’t expected at all, and I must say I was very happy when I opened the package.

Speaking of the actual expansion value, I’d say that overall is a great addition to the game. All the new factions bring a wide range of different mechanics and fit in with most of the other factions, including the 8 of the base game.
Mythic Greeks are my favourite pick of this box as I love how well Greek mythology is represented here, and then of course Dragons for being… Dragons.

Also, it’s a no-brainer purchase for every Sharknado fan. I know you’re out there somewhere, stop hiding!

Cease and Desist

We’re gonna totally get busted.
Smash Up: Cease and Desist brings you some of the coolest new factions that are TOTALLY not anything at all like some awesome moves and TV shows that we are really into. Not at all.
Cease and Desist box description

Components

  • Astroknights;
  • Changerbots;
  • Ignobles;
  • Star Roamers;
  • 8 new Base cards;
  • 4 divider cards;
  • 1 VP Tokens Sheet;
  • 1 rulebook.

Factions overview

Smash Up expansions Astroknights

ASTROKNIGHTS: directly from a galaxy far far away… this faction excels in buffing their minions with +1 power counters and draw cards to play as extra actions.
Cards examples:

  • Space Prince
    Talent: Play an extra action that directly increases the power of one of your minions.
  • Block the Probe
    Choose a minion. It gains +2 power until the end of the turn. Special: You may play this card before a base scores.

Suggested pairings: Dinosaurs, Mega Troopers, Disco Dancers, Shapeshifters and Mythic Greeks.

CHANGERBOTS: robots that can transmorph into various forms? I’ll take it, please! The main mechanic of this faction is to give you the choice of switching between different status: higher power at the cost of useful abilities, or vice versa.
Cards examples:

  • Bruiser
    Ongoing: This minion cannot be destroyed. Talent: This minion gains +2 power and loses its Ongoing ability and all other abilities until the start of your next turn.
  • Change Into A Gun
    Play on one of your minions to destroy a minion of power 4 or less there. Ongoing: This minion has -2 power. Destroy this card at the start of your turn.

Suggested pairings: Cyborg Apes, Wizards, Shapeshifters, Explorers and Kitty Cats.

Smash Up expansions Ignobles

IGNOBLES: this faction’s core mechanic revolves around betrayal. To mimic this sentiment, your cards have the ability to give someone else control of your minions and then take them back at the right time.
Cards examples:

  • Repaying Debts
    Give control of one of your minions to another player to draw two cards and play an extra minion.
  • Foot of the King
    Ongoing: At the end of your turn, you may take control of a minion you own.

Suggested pairings: Elves, Shapeshifters, Itty Critters, Kitty Cats, and Bear Cavalry.

STAR ROAMERS: these guys join us as a powerful defensive faction. While defending your minions from other players’ attacks, they can also manipulate the board by returning minions to owner’s hand, triggering extra abilities. Create chains between minions and actions is the way to go here!
Cards examples:

  • Protector Fields
    Play on a base where you have a minion. Ongoing: Your minions here are not affected by other players’ cards.
  • Ship’s Engineer
    Ongoing: If another one of your minions would be returned to your hand, you may move it to another base instead.

Suggested pairings: Aliens, Shapeshifters, Ninja, Elder things and Ignobles.

Buy it or skip it? TIE.

Tie? Am I flippin’ crazy?
Quite possibly, but not because of this answer. Let me explain: this Smash Up expansion is one of the highest rated because it contains 4 factions with universally loved themes (Star Wars, Star Trek, Transformers and Game of Thrones) and introduces new mechanics really really interesting.
On the other hand, though, these factions are more complicated to play and their cards need to be played at correct timing in order to win.

If you’re a fan of one of these themes and you like the idea of stepping up a notch the game difficulty (and its length), go for it and you won’t be disappointed at all. But if you are a beginner or more like a casual gamer, I truly think there are better expansions for you out there.

This set has factions standing for four ages. At first, the children, hugging Teddy Bears Whose cuteness oft confounds opposing minions. The youth will next pursue their favourite band Of Rock Stars questing for the greatest bases. Mature Explorers, restless in midlife, Strive always to be first in new horizons. Last, wise in life’s pursuits, the Grannies shall Manipulate their decks to draw what’s needed.
What Were We Thinking? box description

Components

  • Explorers;
  • Grannies;
  • Rock Stars;
  • Teddy Bears;
  • 8 new Base cards;
  • 4 divider cards;
  • 1 VP Tokens Sheet;
  • 1 rulebook.

Factions overview

EXPLORERS: this faction has the unique ability to manipulate the bases deck, choosing which base will be drawn from that deck. They can also play an extra minion on the new base revealed.
Cards examples:

  • Crypt Looter
    Special: After a new base comes into play, you may play this minion on it as an extra minion.
  • Lost City
    Special: After a base scores, reveal the top two cards of the base deck. Choose one to replace the scored base and discard the other. Play a minion on the new base as an extra minion.

Suggested pairings: Mythic Greeks, Miskatonic University, Tornados, Changerbots and Mythic Horses.

GRANNIES: these differently-young women know very well how to manipulate cards. Their core mechanic is to move minions at the bottom of your deck, and actions at the top of it, and then play those cards as extra minion or action.
Cards examples:

  • Hush, My Stories are On
    Reveal the bottom card of your deck and draw it. If it is a minion you may play it as an extra minion.
  • Granny’s Purse
    Reveal the top card of your deck. If it is an action, you may draw it or return it. Otherwise, place it on the bottom of your deck. Play an extra action.

Suggested pairings: Halflings, Mythic Greek, Super Spies, Mythic Horse and Mages.

ROCK STARS: this faction gets advantages when the bases have a breakpoint of 21 or higher to trigger their ability to draw extra cards. They are also the number one faction at swarming bases thanks to their second mechanic that revolves around Groupies.
Cards examples:

  • Guest Star
    Search your deck and/or discard pile for a Groupie and reveal it. Place it in your hand or play it as an extra minion. Shuffle your deck if you searched it.
  • Classic Rocker
    Talent: If this base has a breakpoint of 21 or higher, draw a card. Use only one Classic Rocker ability per turn.

Suggested pairings: Mythic Horses, Explorers, Robots, Dinosaurs and Innsmouth.

TEDDY BEARS: these cute bears have a wide range of abilities at their disposal, such as drawing extra cards, playing extra minions and getting power from other players’ minions.
Cards examples:

  • Lovely Bear
    Ongoing: This minion’s starting power is increased to the highest starting power of an opponent’s minion here.
  • Care Package
    Draw a card and play an extra minion.

Suggested pairings: Aliens, Shapeshifters, Ninja, Elder things and Ignobles.

Buy it or skip it? BUY IT!

This 9th box is one of the Smash Up expansions that contains the most fun!
All these 4 factions are really good picks and they can easily support most of the other factions of the game.

Rock Stars is one of my favourite factions of the game and I’d recommend anyone to try it at least once.
I personally think that this expansion is almost a must buy.

Big in Japan

Are we turning Japanese?
We really think so…
Smash Up is back after a vacation in the Far East, and it brought all new factions like you’ve never seen before! Unless you, like, watch TV or movies or read comics or something. But who does that?
Big in Japan box description

  • Kaiju;
  • Magical Girls;
  • Mega Troopers;
  • 8 new Base cards;
  • 4 Titan cards (also dividers);
  • 1 VP Tokens Sheet;
  • 1 rulebook.

Factions overview

ITTY CRITTERS: this faction focuses on temporarily playing extra minions (with power 2 or less) directly from the deck, that will stay on the board just until the end of your turn. These low-power creatures have a wide range of valuable abilities.
Cards examples:

  • Critter Coach
    You may search your deck for a minion of power 2 or less and play it here as an extra minion. If you control it at the end of the turn, place it on the bottom of your deck.
  • Krakatoad
    You may choose another minion here to gain +2 power until the end of the turn

KAIJU: summoned to bring destruction to the table, Kaiju are specialized in using their powerful actions to destroy opponents’ cards and gain massive power.
Cards examples:

Suggested pairings: Steampunks, Dragons, Bear Cavalry and Wizards.

MAGICAL GIRLS: these cute girls can be really strong if you let them occupy a base with a large number of minions, in fact, their core mechanic revolves around some abilities that are proportionally strong to the number of minions on a base.
Cards examples:

  • Technomagical Lass
    Talent: Destroy a minion you don’t control here with power less than or equal to the number of your minions here.
  • Lunar Captain
    Talent: Choose a minion in your discard pile with power less than or equal to the number of your minions here, and place it into your hand

Suggested pairings: Robots, Fairies, Sharks, Mythic Horses and Shapeshifters.

MEGA TROOPERS: this faction’s core mechanic is to trigger their special abilities just right before a base scores, giving you the chance to manipulate the scoring to your advantage.
Cards examples:

  • Lightning Rescue!
    Special: Before a base scores, play an action as a special action.
  • Green Trooper
    Special: Before a base scores, you may play this minion there as an extra minion

Suggested pairings: Astroknights, Ninja, Rock Stars, Robots and Miskatonic University.

This is the first box of the Smash Up expansions that introduces Titans.
These unique cards can be played under particular conditions and they can help you to win the game, thanks to their powerful abilities.

All the new factions are very strong and fulfilling to play, bringing the right amount of versatility to the table.
The introduction of Titans put these 4 factions on a higher step, in terms of power, compared to the others… so play them fairly.

I could not have been happier when I first saw this expansion. It is a nerd’s dream, please don’t wake me up!

RELATED Smash Up

That ’70s Expansion

Right on! Hop in the Waywaywayback Machine and join Smash Up in the dy-no-mite ’70s! Few decades have had as much style as the ’70s, and it created some memorable factions we knew you’d want to use to smash bases. We had to give them to you, because, who loves ya, baby?
That ’70s Expansion box description

Components

  • Disco Dancers;
  • Kung Fu Fighters;
  • Truckers;
  • Vigilantes;
  • 8 new Base cards;
  • 4 dividers cards;
  • 1 VP Tokens Sheet;
  • 1 rulebook.

Factions overview

DISCO DANCERS: this faction has the power of duplicate the effect of their actions card, increasing the minions those particular actions would normally affect.
Cards examples:

  • Dancing King
    Ongoing: When a standard action directly affects one or more minions here, you may choose another minion here to be affected the same way.
  • Diva
    Ongoing: Once each turn, when a standard action directly affects one or more of your other minions here, you may choose this minion to be affected the same way.

Suggested pairings: Astroknights, Dinosaurs, Aliens, Innsmouth and Time Travelers.

KUNG FU FIGHTERS: these bunch of fighters are specialized in working as a team to generate +1 power counters and destroy opponents’ minions.
Cards examples:

  • Lady Whirlwind
    Talent: If this minion has no +1 power counters on it, destroy a minion here with less power to place a +1 power counter on this minion.
  • Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting
    Choose a base. Each player with a minion there destroys another player’s minion there.

Suggested pairings: Mad Scientists, Giant Ants, Warriors, Sharks and Itty Critters.

TRUCKERS: their core mechanic revolves around playing mostly “on-base” actions and moving cards around.
Cards examples:

  • “El Bandido”
    You may take control of an action on this base. Talent: Play an extra action on a base, OR transfer an action from one base to another.
  • Fixin’ to Fix It
    Choose an action in your discard pile that can be played on a base, and play it as an extra action.

Suggested pairings: Kaiju, Tricksters, Dragons and Steampunk.

VIGILANTES: they have an unusual set of 4-power minions (similar to the Princesses) and their core mechanic is based on the abilities of those minions, very aggressive and powerful such as power boost and minions destruction.
Cards examples:

  • Death Wisher
    Ongoing: Once per turn, after another player destroys a minion they don’t control, you may destroy one of that player’s minions.
  • Jacky Bill
    Ongoing: After another player plays an action, you may have this minion gain +2 power until the end of the turn.

Suggested pairings: Shapeshifters, Bear Cavalry, All Stars and Elves.

Buy it or skip it? SKIP IT!

This 13th addition to the endless list of Smash Up expansions introduces 4 factions quite tricky to play.
In particular, Disco Dancers and Kung Fu Fighters have some very difficult-to-understand card descriptions.

I personally like Smash Up for infinite reasons, including its simplicity. It is just too boring looking for clarifications anytime I find cards with confusing descriptions.
This problem, together with the fact that I’m not a huge fan of the ’70s theme, makes me say that for me it’s a skip.

I’d just buy it for collection.

  • Smash Up: That ’70s Expansion is a standalone two-player-only game that can also be used as an expansion for other Smash Up titles

Oops, You Did It Again

Now You’ve Done It … Again!
Smash Up has turned the asylum over to the inmates yet again! After the success of It’s Your Fault, we decided to let the fans choose the factions that would make up the latest set of Smash Up, and they went for some powerful choices!
Oops, You Did It Again box description

Components

  • Ancient Egyptians;
  • Cowboys;
  • Samurai;
  • Vikings;
  • 8 new Base cards;
  • 4 dividers cards;
  • 1 VP Tokens Sheet;
  • 1 rulebook.

Factions overview

ANCIENT EGYPTIANS: they have the unique ability to bury some of their cards, to then uncover them at the right time with the purpose of scoring more points.
Cards examples:

  • Pharaoh
    Ongoing: After another buried card is uncovered, draw a card. Special: Before this base scores, you may uncover one of your buried cards here.
  • Lost Knowledge
    Bury a card from your hand OR uncover one of your buried cards. Special: You may play this card before a base scores.

Suggested pairings: Ghosts, Faries, Killer Plants, Dragons and Superheroes.

COWBOYS: this faction’s main gameplay is built around the newly introduced mechanic of Duel. They have a bunch of cards that boost their minions’ power and help them win duels against the other players.
Cards examples:

  • Sheriff
    Special: Before this base scores, this minion may duel another player’s minion here. Destroy the losing minion.
  • Deputy
    Special: On your turn or during a duel involving your minion, you may discard this card from your hand to give a minion +2 power until the end of the turn.

Suggested pairings: Steampunks, Wizards, Disco Dancers, Astroknights and Sharks.

SAMURAI: This is the other faction that uses Duels, although their core mechanic revolves around getting benefits and boosts when their minions go to the discard pile.
Cards examples:

  • Bushi
    Ongoing: After this minion goes to the discard pile from play while it has 5 or more power, gain 1 VP.
  • Way of the Warrior
    Until the end of the turn, one of your minions gains +3 power, and if it goes to the discard pile from play, draw a card.

Suggested pairings: Shapeshifters, Mad Scientist, Minions of Cthulhu, Zombie and All Stars.

VIKINGS: pillage is the only word they know. The core mechanic of this faction revolves around stealing cards from other players and gaining power by placing cards from your hand to the top of your deck.
Cards examples:

  • Huscarl
    Talent: Place a card from your hand on top of your deck to give this minion +2 power until the end of the turn.
  • Berserk
    Place a card from your hand on top of your deck to give one of your minions +3 power until the end of the turn.

Suggested pairings: Time Travelers, Werewolves, Rock Stars, Ghosts and Robots.

Buy it or skip it? TIE.

We did it again, but unfortunately, this time the outcome isn’t as good as the previous “It’s Your Fault” expansion.
This one introduces 2 new important mechanics, Burying and Dueling, which bring us a fresh air of new gameplay, which is always much appreciated.

But, these new mechanics are more difficult to learn and teach, adding a lot more waiting time between your turns, and I personally don’t really like (as much as I would have liked) how they have designed some of these factions, Samurai and Vikings above all.

Having said that, the expansion is great overall and the artwork is stunning. Valkyrie is one of my favourite cards in the game!
I would not buy it if you are a beginner of the game or more like a casual gamer. In that case, maybe it’s better to move on to other Smash Up expansions.

SUMO WRESTLERS: this faction has two main mechanics; the first one is to be able to move opponents’ minions away from bases where you have minions. The other mechanic is the ability to gain +1 power counters at the cost of discarding cards.
Cards examples:

  • Bulking Stew
    Discard any number of cards. For each card discarded, place a +1 power counter on one of your minions.
  • Third Tier
    You may move another player’s minion with power 3 or less from here to another base to draw a card

The first expansion of the new World Tour Smash Up Expansions series.
This one features 4 factions that have amazing artwork, pretty easy gameplay (apart from Musketeers perhaps) and good synergies with the other factions in the game.

Compared to the previous expansion, this is a step back to a more traditional expansion that doesn’t add any new gameplay mechanics that slow the game pace down. And I personally prefer it!

Really great addition to the game, totally recommended!

The second expansion of the new World Tour Smash Up Expansions series.
This addition box features 5 factions very interesting, with unique mechanics and stunning artworks. AEG never stops to impress its audience!
The fact that there are 5 factions at the price of 4, should already be an instant-buy reason.

Just be aware though, these factions are a bit more complicated to play and require a good knowledge of the game and its rules.
If you know Smash Up very well, this is an amazing expansion to have!

On the other hand, I would probably not recommend it if you just started playing this game.
